When to Change Your Locks?
A common procedure for locksmiths is lock changing. Lock changing is a precaution that should always be taken by new homeowners, and hiring an experienced locksmith to do the job is strongly recommended.
Anytime you move into a new home it is important to have the locks on all of the doors changed. The previous owners may have claimed to have handed over all of their keys, but you can never be 100% sure.
They could have duplicate keys that you are not aware of, and that they could use to enter your home. It is not always necessary to completely replace the locks that are currently on your door. An experienced locksmith is able to perform a procedure called re-keying. Re-keying involves replacing the inner parts of the lock (i.e. tumblers) with different sized parts. A new key will only work in the newly changed lock, and not the old one. Re-keying is somewhat less expensive than replacing the entire lock. Re-keying vehicle locks is also possible.
Homeowners are not the only people who should consider changing door locks. Businesses that supply employees with entry to the building with a key must also take precaution. Anytime an employee gets dismissed or leaves the company, locks to the building should be changed or re-keyed.
